Our Garden Party was a result of our garden theme which was integrated throughout our subjects. Our class began by planting tomato and basil seeds in our classroom and later transferred them into our school garden. In science we studied plant and insect life cycles, soil types and functions, plant adaptation, designed our own gardens after reading Peter Rabbit, discussed the seasons, and the importance of the sun. In reading we studied nonfiction books on how bees and butterflies help a garden thrive, different types of vegetable plants, and discovered gardener's favorite reading materials such as plant catalogues and seed packets. In writing we wrote persuasive letters to seed companies asking for donations and informational pieces on each child's favorite garden insect. We also reviewed our "How to" writing unit by writing a piece on how to make pesto sauce after a demonstration using our own classroom made basil. In math we measured plant growth in both full and half sunny spots , represented our data in bar graphs, estimated the amount of seeds in a tomato and found the difference between the actual answer and their estimates, etc. Through our school's fresh fruit and vegetable program students were introduced to some foods they have not been exposed to while also listening and reading fun, creative fiction books centered around them. The children were so proud of all they accomplished and learned. They walked away having a more personal experience with eating healthy foods, recognized the importance of insects, as well as the love, care and teamwork a garden needs to thrive.
